el 8 de agosto del 2018

every once in a while, life comes running at you
and you get this funny feeling that you knew it was coming.
that's how i felt when i finally got my mission call.
it was a feeling that i didn't realize i was missing, but
one, that as soon as i felt it, knew i was looking for all along.

i was one of those people that didn't do research about my mission before setting off for the mtc.
i didn't even ask questions about what the mtc would be like.
i decided to just go along for the ride, and let it take me where it would.

fast forward through the rollercoaster that was the mtc,
and the first couple of weeks of my first "cambio" (or exchange) with my companion.
(for those of you who don't know, a mission is divided into sections, called exchanges,
usually six weeks long. every mission calls them something different, but
being spanish-speaking, we called them cambios.)

my companion and i had had great success finding people to teach
and helping people come unto christ.
but i felt like we were lacking on something i felt like we, as missionaries,
should be taking a bigger effort to do: service for those in our area.

so we set off to an appointment one day, without really thinking too much about it.
andy, my precious andy, wasn't home, so we decided to spend some time
meeting a few new people in the surrounding area.
we ended up behind a school not far from andy's home,
and i felt prompted to knock on a giant red door.
it was the only one on the whole street i felt like we should knock, too.
when i did, guess whose big, adorable black eyes answered the door?
andy.
andy had gone over to his grandma's house after school
because she had been sick the last couple of days.
he would spend the afternoon in her company,
before it got too dark and he couldn't make it back home safely.
when we got there, we spent some time with andy,
but something wasn't right.
we felt the need to talk with andy's grandma and help her in her need.
as sister missionaries, we could only pray and ask in faith
that she would be healed, but there was something more we could do:
serve.

andy's grandma made a small comment about not being able to offer water
because all the cups and other possible cups were dirty.
that day was the day i learned the word traste,
the word the nicaraguans use to describe the dishes in general.
my companion and i spent an hour washing all of her dishes and putting them away with andy.
when we were done, she offered to make us jugo or refresco
but by then, we felt like our work there was done.
we excused ourselves, and went on our way.

little did i know, that andy's grandma was a less active member
and that andy had been begging her for months to come to church
(ever since he started taking the lessons, really).
the next sunday, guess who was sitting next to andy at church:
grandma.
in the remaining months i was there in loma linda,
grandma's health came and went.
but andy never failed to come with grandma to church.

there are many times in my life, that i wonder what it would be like to go back to nicaragua
now that i have lived on my own again for two years.
a lot of things have changed, and a lot of things have not.
people would still view me as fachenta, or rich, because of my white female status.
i often dream though of yelling buenas over crude fences and doors of zinc.
of the smiles and cries and abrazos that would be inevitable when they recognized me.
i can't decided if i would want a party or just a few minutes at each home to catch up, pay my respects, and move on.
there really is no other way around it:
soy nica y nada me va a cambiar.

el primero de febrero 2016

this week was long. probably because we didn´t have lot of breaks, it was just
go, go, go every moment. i finally had a good study this morning and i feel so
much better. we worked with the sister leaders, we went to managua and were
almost late for a meeting with president because of a traffic jam, we had a chat
with our zone leaders about sister naumu´s health, what else. soo much more.

the next transfer date is not until march 9, so sister naumu and i still have some
time together. :)

a favorite person this week... karen and keyling are making another appearance.
it´s great to have some members who understand us and who have been on the
mission before so that they can help us give us new ideas. last night, they came
and picked up some stuff from our house, and we had fun taking pictures in the street...

karen, hermana naumu (who doesn´t like pictures), keyling, and me.

big success, well. we made it to managua on tuesday in time and safely. we got
stuck in a really bad traffic jam after an accident. lots of hurried cars and not a lot
of room to keep the traffic moving, it took forever to get into managua. a forty
five minute trip took us almost two hours....

tender mercy. i got to get better! we found out that the stomach pains i have been
having are due to a little parasitic friend that i picked up, but thanks to some heavy
duty, human approved parasite killers, i am feeling much better. it´s ruined my appetite
for dinner, but i'm getting better.

the scripture that wins the title is doctrine and covenants 30. i read it this morning,
and my head immediately turned it into a tiny little interview...

have i feared man more than God?
do i rely on them for strength, or do i rely on Him?
is my mind on the things of the earth or in the things of my Maker?
is my mind in the work i was called to do?
have i given heed to the spirit?
have i been persuaded by those of whom have not been commanded by my Maker?
do i fear in my moment to open my mouth?
do i head the words and advice of my leaders?
am i afflicted with my companion in her afflictions?
do i pray always?
am i diligent?
do i open my mouth to proclaim His gospel with the voice of a trump?
do i fear what man can do?

because the blessings are these::
i am with you
the power to build up His church among the Lamanites
an eternal life.

i know these things are true. we were called to be here in these days to share our testimonies.

el 25 de Enero

this week was really nice here. it was chilly, and i actually wore a long
sleeved sweater all day one day. the people here say that colder weather
is still to come, so i am in heaven!
a favorite scripture from this week...
2 nephi 10:13
::and he that fighteth against zion shall perish, saith god.::

a tender mercy. that we actually got a p-day today. we went to managua
this morning for a conference with elder craig christiansen from the
presidency of the seventy. it was really nice to hear his councel, but it
would have been even better if i could have gotten a little bit more sleep.
i only got about four hours of solid sleep last night... yeah....
a favorite person. hermana garfield. she´s in the same district as me again
and it´s been really cool to chat and catch up. she´s with one of the other
sisters who was in our new meeting, and it´s been really fun to share experiences
and catch up. there just isn´t enough said through an email....
goals for this week: work with the members. i am tired of saying it, but we have
to do it. too many weeks without success...
we had a really rough experience when our baptismal possibility went from positive,
to shaky, to complete belly flop in a course of twelve hours. we went in on saturday
morning to set up everything and he said he wanted to do it later in the evening, so
we went along with it. we showed up a few minutes early, and he had left the house.
two hours of searching and waiting and he didn´t come home. needless to say we had
to swallow some rough pills from exhausted leaders and it was rough. if you have a
spare prayer, keep us in them.
sorry for the lack of pictures. just a crazy week. but i love you all!

el 12 de Octubre

this week was a little bit of a roller coaster. we went to managua on tuesday and ended up spending almost all day in managua, i.e. we only had an hour to go to work. repeat, we had less than an hour of work. to all my missionary friends, you know what that means.

my investigators are progressing well, with one looking really postive for this weekend. lots of prayers that she can get her reassurance that this really is the truth.

my greatest success... i slept with a mosquito net and didn't suffocate. let me explain: the mission gave us mosquito nets and made it obligatory to sleep with them. although my mom had sent me one at the beginning of my mission, i never ever got my life together enough to pull it out of the package and hang it up. well, wednesday morning that we had to do. turns out that i have a little bit of clostrophia, but i made it to bed without too many problems. here's to not getting bit by a bed bug at night!

one of my goals for the coming week is to become a more consacrated missionary. it's one of the things that we talked about during our meeting in managua on tuesday and i really look forward to putting it all into practice for the last half of my mission.... wait for it. that's right, you read it right...

i have been out on the mission nine months.

crazy right?!

a favorite person... the person that decided to put a twist on minute to win it games and allow us to play them during our multi-zone meeting on tuesday. zona granada put it in the bag, eating five oreos, removing the tissues the fastest, and moving the cups the fastest....

elder mataalii and elder hartley, our zone leaders... sharing the load to work the hardest

hermana chi, strengthening her facial muscles to make a smile ;)

(this picture didn't load- oh,how I wish it had though) and me, working on who knows what... but just take a second and look at how much i look like my mother in this picture.... thank you..

a favorite scripture, lost but then again found in second corithians 5:6-7,
::Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: For we walk by faith, not by sight.::

while we are away from the lord, may we take confidence and walk by our faith, nothing wavering, to be led back home to him.

i know that this work is true, and may we all look for ways to share our lights with others
